In een interview met Forbes<\/a> moedigt Neelie Kroes de Nederlandse startups aan vooral op tijd hun vleugels uit te slaan. In tegenstelling tot wat in veel andere landen gebruikelijk is, is het volgens Kroes onwenselijk om in ons land “een eigen Silicon Valley” te ambi\u00ebren. Ook zegt ze dat Nederlandse startups nog steeds lijden onder een soort minderwaardigheidscomplex en last hebben van een cultuur waar falen niet gewenst is.<\/p>\n

In Forbes, dat benadrukt dat de Nederlandse tech-startupscene zich rond Eindhoven concentreert, legt Kroes uit hoe Nederland en Europa uiteindelijk weer profiteren van startups die naar Amerika verhuizen:<\/p>\n

According to Neelie Kroes, special envoy for Dutch startups, her country sees a strong argument for giving its innovators the opportunity to take flight for greater opportunities in other nations, rather than trying to keep them at home. \u201cThey will start to develop their business in the U.S., then enlarge their market to Europe again,\u201d says Kroes. \u201cIt\u2019s a global thing.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Als voorbeelden noemt Forbes bedrijven als Shapeways, Mendix en AdYen. Volgens Forbes kan\u00a0Kroes’ aansporing misschien wel lastig te begrijpen zijn voor traditionele ontwikkelaars, tegelijk is het gezien de Nederlandse situatie ook wel logisch. De Nederlandse markt is simpelweg te klein om een eigen Silicon Valley te willen cre\u00ebren.<\/p>\n

Kroes ziet veel goeds in de Nederlandse startup-situatie. Maar tegelijk zijn er twee grote barri\u00e8res die nog doorbroken moeten worden: onze aangeboren bescheidenheid en onze angst om te falen. Kroes:\u00a0\u201cIt is a general attitude of Dutch people that you don\u2019t profile yourself as being successful.\u201d Zeker afgezet tegenover Amerikaanse startups is dat een groot nadeel, bijvoorbeeld bij het vinden van investeerders.<\/p>\n

Datzelfde geldt voor de bereidheid om risico’s te nemen. Die is momenteel veel te klein in Nederland, zegt Kroes.\u00a0\u201cThe culture of failing is far more accepted in the United States. You need failure to be successful in your next step. That is not really accepted in general terms in the Netherlands yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
