People from many different countries live, study and work in Eindhoven. Every week, E52 has a talk\u00a0with an international about what brought them here and what life is like in Eindhoven.<\/p>\n

Just outside the city centre of Eindhoven is Pand P, a theatre, restaurant and the home of Stichting Watershed, a non-profit literary platform. We speak to Juliet Gagnon on the terrace. \u201cIt\u00b4s the last week of the summer holiday, so my daughter Frankie joins us,\u201d she says with a smile. After we are settled with some coffee and a soda, Juliet tells more about Watershed and her dreams and ideas. \u201cI started it with the intention to create something to bring writers together. As a writer, you can learn from other writers and get useful feedback. On our own we tend to look at our work with blinders on.\u201d Juliet started Stichting Watershed in 2014 and it has been growing ever since.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal is to set up an academy for writers. We believe in the power of \u2018Relentless Learning\u2019. The educational system in the United States is slightly different compared to the Netherlands. There are a lot of people who go get experience in the professional field and then return to school later to further their field or search new fields. This way you can find out where you want to specialize in and where your passion is. I found that very useful, it gave me time to grow. At Watershed we are working on developing a model that answers this need to keep learning here in the Netherlands. We have started with organizing residencies, these are a sort of literary boot camps, each year called Camp Cushy. And of course we have our public programming with Radio Slik, stage program with SLIK live and for the first time, we will have a literary evening in the Parktheater on the 29th of August. The program is bilingual, Dutch and English. During our matinees and evenings, we talk about the larger social topics and how they are unravelled through the lens of \u00a0literature. Literature enables you to look at life through the eyes of other people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Juliet came to the Netherlands for the first time in 1999. \u201cI was supposed to go study abroad for a semester and at first chose China. But the trip got cancelled. So, I had a whole semester of free time. A friend lived in Amsterdam and asked if would come to visit. That was my first visit, and later I came back for short breaks, like 15 or 20 times. And in 2009 I ended up staying for good. Less than two months ago, I became a Dutch citizen, that is very special to me. In December there is the city ceremony and we will have a big party after. By learning the Dutch language, the way I looked at the Netherlands changed. Although, it is still difficult to joke around in Dutch. I come across differently when I express myself in Dutch or English.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cIn Brabant, in general, there is a great support for new things. People open up their network and make time for you. For example, one of our board members Joep Huiskamp is one of these people- with such a great and varied knowledge, openness and network that helps me a lot. He introduced me to Giel Pastoor, director of the Parktheater. Giel took the time to listen to my vision for Watershed and helped me with inspiration and insight to develop my ideas further. Tthese sorts of relationships create a domino effect especially for smaller start-up cultural organizations. In a city that is so dominated by technology, culture is needed. More and more people here want to see that flourish. But I hope the cultural landscape doesn\u2019t get pushed into a system. Not everything has to be labelled or put in boxes. Where the avant-garde is, things are happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRunning Watershed takes up a lot of time, and with a 6-year-old who I also want to be present for so I am often working from home and long hours in between,\u201d Juliet tells when asked about her spare time. During the conversation, Frankie has been drawing, but when it comes to doing fun stuff, she joins in: \u201cWe do nice things, like eating ice cream. We like the flavours of Intelligentia Ice. My favourite is Oreo, with a bit of cotton candy on top!\u201d And when asked what her favourite playground is, she doesn\u2019t have to think long: \u201cPhilipsdorp. It\u2019s the best!\u201d<\/p>\n

In Eindhoven wonen, studeren en werken mensen afkomstig uit veel verschillende landen. E52 bespreekt elke week met een international wat hen hier heeft gebracht en hoe het leven in Eindhoven is.<\/p>\n

Net buiten het stadscentrum van Eindhoven staat Pand P, een theater, restaurant en ook het thuis van Stichting Watershed, een non-profit literair platform. We spreken Juliet op het terras. \u201cHet is de laatste week van de zomervakantie, dus mijn dochter Frankie is ook van de partij,\u201d zegt ze met een lach. Nadat we zijn voorzien van koffie en een flesje fris vertelt Juliet meer over Watershed en haar dromen en idee\u00ebn. \u201cIk ben begonnen met de intentie iets te cre\u00ebren om schrijvers bij elkaar te brengen. Als schrijver kun je leren van andere schrijvers en bruikbare feedback krijgen. In ons eentje hebben toch de neiging om met oogkleppen op naar ons werk te kijken.\u201d Juliet richtte Stichting Watershed op in 2014 en het blijft sindsdien groeien.<\/p>\n

\u201cOns doel is het starten van een academie voor schrijvers. We geloven in de kracht van \u2018Relentless Learning\u2019, het willen blijven leren en openstaan voor nieuwe input. Het onderwijssysteem in de Verenigde Staten is net iets anders vergeleken met Nederland. Daar doen veel mensen eerst ervaring op in het professionele werkveld en gaan daarna terug naar school om zich te verdiepen of nieuwe werkvelden te ontdekken. Op die manier kun je uitvinden waarin je je wil specialiseren en wat je passie is. Ik vond dat heel nuttig, het gaf mij tijd om te groeien. Bij Watershed werken we aan het ontwikkelen van een model dat beantwoordt aan deze noodzaak om te blijven leren hier in Nederland. We organiseren residencies<\/em>, dat zijn een soort literaire bootcamps die we elke jaar houden onder de naam Camp Cushy. En we hebben natuurlijk ons publieke programma met Radio Slik, het podiumprogramma SLIK live en voor de eerste keer organiseren we een literaire avond in het Parktheater op 29 augustus<\/a>. Het programma is tweetalig, in Nederlands en Engels. Tijdens onze matinees en avonden praten we over de grotere sociale vraagstukken en hoe deze worden ontrafeld door de literatuur. Literatuur laat je naar het leven kijken door de ogen van andere mensen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Juliet kwam in 1999 voor de eerste keer naar Nederland. \u201cIk zou een semester in het buitenland gaan studeren en koos voor China. Maar dat ging niet door, dus ik had een heel semester vrij. Een vriendin woonde in Amsterdam en vroeg of ik op bezoek kwam. Dat was mijn eerst keer in Nederland, gevolgd door 15 tot 20 korte bezoeken in de jaren daarna. In 2009 besloot ik voorgoed te blijven. Bijna twee maanden geleden ben ik Nederlander geworden en dat is erg bijzonder voor mij. In december wordt er door de gemeente een ceremonie gehouden en daarna geven we een groot feest. Door Nederlands te leren, ben ik wel anders naar Nederland gaan kijken. Al is het nog wel moeilijk om grapjes te maken in het Nederlands. Ik kom anders over wanneer ik mezelf uit in Nederlands of Engels.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cBrabant kent in het algemeen goede ondersteuning voor nieuwe dingen. Mensen delen hun netwerk met je en maken tijd voor je. Een goed voorbeeld is een van onze bestuursleden, Joep Huiskamp. Hij heeft een geweldige en gevarieerde kennis van zaken, is open en heeft een netwerk waar ik veel aan heb gehad. Hij stelde me voor aan Giel Pastoor, directeur van het Parktheater. Giel nam de tijd om naar mijn visie voor Watershed te luisteren en gaf mij inspiratie en inzichten om mijn idee\u00ebn verder te ontwikkelen. Dit soort relaties zorgen voor een domino-effect, helemaal voor kleinere culturele startups. In een stad die wordt gedomineerd door technologie, is cultuur hard nodig. Steeds meer mensen willen ook dat de cultuur meer bloeit hier. Maar ik hoop niet dat het huidige culturele landschap in een systeem wordt geduwd. Niet alles hoeft te worden gelabeld of in hokje te worden gestopt. Juist waar de avant-garde is, gebeuren dingen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDe dagelijkse leiding van Watershed kost veel tijd en met een zesjarige voor wie ik er ook wil zijn, heb ik niet veel tijd over,” vertelt Juliet wanneer haa wordt gevraagd naar haar vrije tijd. Tijdens het gesprek was dochter Frankie tot nu toe aan het tekenen, maar als we het over leuke dingen doen hebben, wil ze ook even wat kwijt: \u201cWe doen leuke dingen, zoals ijsjes eten. We houden van de ijsjes van Intelligentia Ice. Mijn favoriet is Oreo, met een beetje suikerspin erop!\u201d En als haar gevraagd wordt of ze ook nog een favoriete speeltuin heeft, hoeft ze niet lang na te denken: \u201cPhilipsdorp. Dat is de allerleukste!\u201d<\/p>\n
